What to EAT at Tsukiji Outer Market?

NOTICE:  Tsukiji Inner Market closed on October 6, 2018. It has relocated to Toyosu and reopened as Toyosu Market. Tsukiji's outer market will remain in business.

The Tsukiji Outer Market comprises of a combination of retail and food stalls. Here you can find the freshest seafood and is the best place to enjoy a sushi breakfast or lunch.

TIP: Come to the fish markets as early if possible to avoid the crowds. Vendors typically open from approximately 5 or 6am and serve fish that are caught and bought from the Toyosu Wholesale Market.

Funnily enough our first meal at Tsukiji Market was not seafood. It was at Kitsuneya which is known for their Horumon bowls - Horumon typically refers to organ meat or offal. Since we aren't huge fans of offal we opted for the Gyudon (Beef Bowl - ¥680) instead with an additional onsen tamago.

Incredibly tender slices of beef, onion and a sweet soy sauce concoction on top of a bed of steamed white rice. The white rice just soaked up all that delicious sauce and flavour. Definitely recommend the gyudon at Kitsuneya. Next time we'll have to try the horumon. What a delicious start of the day!

Since we were in Tsukiji Fish Market, we just had to grab some seafood. There was a huge line outside a place called Maguroya Kurogin so we had to check it out. They were serving fresh tuna/salmon sashimi as well as tuna bowls. Did we get something? You bet! We got the Otoro (fatty tuna) and Salmon bowl. Oh dear, the fatty tuna was just melt-in-mouth goodness!

John, being the huge oyster fan that he is, had to find one of those huge oysters. Being in Tsukiji, we knew we were going to find some quality ones. We came across many vendors selling humongous oysters - some the size of my IPhone 7 Plus (yes yes I'm a few generations behind). Of course we got one and boy was it tasty. Big, juicy and deliciously creamy.

Another popular food attraction at the market was Tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelette). Slightly sweet rolled omelettes, served on a skewer. Suprisingly quite tasty and a joy to eat.

We also stumbled upon vendors that sold big, plump-looking mochi. They had many flavours including matcha, red bean, custard and black sesame. The black sesame mochi was awesome and the filling was very generous!

If you've been to Japan or are planning to, you cannot come and not have one of their soft serve ice creams. Our favourite? CREMIA soft serve ice cream. Thankfully there were a few shops that sold this beautifully milky soft ice cream served in an almost crepe-like cookie cone.

That's pretty much what we got to try on our morning in Tsukiji this time round but there were just so many more things we wanted to taste. Next time we'd definitely want to spend a bit longer there and see what else the markets had to offer.
